To her children's alarm, armed with littlemore than expectation, fifty-something Angela takes off for Japan on a ‘last’ adventure, determined tomaster a fiendishly difficult language whilst living with a variety of Japanese host families in that beguiling and mysterious country.

The story of her six months in Kanazawa on Honshu island covers experiences of malnutrition in an ancient geisha house, the intricacies of the Tea Ceremony and her terror as a typhoon raged through the night, as well as the many mishaps and misunderstandings resolved through the patience and kindness of strangers who became her friends. Angela Cook’s Japanese journey winds its way into her readers’ affection and delights with its keen observation and humour.

With adroit wit and self-deprecation she immerses herself in the minutae of her various hosts’ daily life, relishing this extraordinary culture as her six-month odyssey becomes a voyage of fulfilment despite her failure to achieve language fluency. This is the very personal story of someone who takes life by the horns – an absorbing, moving account of one woman’s quest for self-realisation. ANGE L A COOK was born in London but came to live in Ireland in her in her 20’s with her Irish husband and three small children.

While living in Dublin she juggled motherhood with working as a busy court reporter at the Four Courts. The family later moved to Cork where their son Richard was born. They made Cobh their home where Angela ran a successful Flower Shop called Good Scents for a number of years. (Her daughter Miranda later opened another Flower Shop in Kinsale). She was a well liked and active participant in the community, helping with the local Athletics teams and building adventure playgrounds.

When her kids grew up she set off on a new adventure as described in her book.
